Workout Tip for The Week

Jillian Michaels's and the “30 Day Shred”

All of my life I have been a believer in the value of physical fitness. Before the birth of my first child I was a regular at the YMCA and spent a whole hour of my time there just doing cardio on the elliptical. On March 10, 2006 all of that changed. The arrival of our first daughter was perfectly timed with the half way point of a very intense two year, full time, masters program in which I was enrolled while also working full time. By June I was realizing that the time I spent in the gym was a thing of the past. We then invested $4000+ in an elliptical EFX and off I went into doing it in my basement. Now I am a lover of the elliptical for many reasons, you can work out when you are hurt because of how kind it is to your joints, it burns the crap out of calories and it targets the areas I need the most. So for the last 3+ years I have been religiously been doing my EFX four times a week (no, I don’t do it for an hour anymore).

Several months ago after dropping my daughter off to Montessori School I noticed a woman dropping her child off also who I knew had a 6 month old baby who had not only lost her baby weight but she looked amazing! I turned my head to look at her and then when I realized what I was doing I asked her what the heck she does to look so good. Well, that question changed my workout regimen and I don’t know her name but if you are reading please post a comment. She began with “well, I got this DVD” and I immediately tuned her out because since my husband has been doing P90X I am all too familiar with videos and the fact that 45 minutes is short for one of those. I cannot do anything that takes more than 31 minutes. I have a 3 year old and a 22 month old. There is no way that I am willing to spend 1 hour + working out at this point in my life. So when she got to the end of her speech about the DVD that I was only half listening to I asked “so how long does this workout take?” You will never believe me. The answer was 20 minutes!!!!! Who does not have 20 minutes a day to dedicate to your physical fitness? So she said that she got it at Target and it was only $15 dollars so off I went to buy it that day. I can do anything for 20 minutes…right??

Do you know who Jillian Michaels is? She is one of the trainers on The Biggest Loser. I must admit to being sucked into this show more than just a couple of times. So when I heard the name I kind of knew that she was no nonsense. Well, you have no idea. The first time I did the “30 Day Shred” I was hooked! All you need to get started is a couple of hand weights and either a mat or a carpeted surface. It was the best workout I had done in years! Maybe ever. What a great use of your time working out. She works “big muscles with small muscles for maximum calorie burn and maximum results.” I did not think this would be able to take the place of the rigorous cardio routine I was used to doing. Boy was I wrong! I was sore for a week when I first started doing it. I am in pretty OK shape and after the first five minutes of level one on the first day I wanted to turn the DVD off. I am not kidding. Jillian kicks your BUTT!! I saw results after the first day! I have now been doing this video and the various levels for long enough to be able to tell you it works! Go buy it at Target for $15. You will thank me.
